The event was one part of public art projects in the two border cities run by the Insite network. Mr Smith was fired into the sky, flying across a rusty border fence from the Mexican beach and landing in a huge net the other side. The special man said he was inspired by circus performers to explore "the notion of spatial and mental borders". The US border chief granted Mr Smith unique dispensation for crossing into the US in such an unconventional manner.

He has also opened the intensive workshop, in which students will be introduced to the essence of balance, the art of tightrope walking and the subtleties of performing. They’ll work their way up to the type of wire rope Petit uses in his performances, practicing at different heights and lengths, learning how to instill theatrical presence and creativity into the performance and how not to get thrown off (while Petit famously performs without a safety net, students will be secured by harnesses).
